Our proposed installation questions the relationship between art and nature; it further examines an imposed relationship between the earth and its synthetic self. As an inverse geometric structure it both mimics and mocks certain functions of environmental art. The elevated earth sample is meant to look like it was pulled from the ground, but its new position in space will highlight its synthetic materiality – day glow orange metal and bright green artificial grass. The installation will change with the seasons - the unnatural orange frame, however, will remain a demarcation device throughout the eleven-month duration.

We propose to excavate a 30” X 42” X 6” section of the ground from Acacia Park in Downtown Colorado Springs. The shape of the rectangular hole will be maintained by day-glow orange, metal. The dirt floor will be level. We will install a barrier to prevent weed growth. The extracted section will be framed and highlighted by day-glow orange metal and elevated 30” above ground level by a steel post. The surface will be made of artificial grass and the entire raised container will be turned slightly.
