Reflecting Puddles (proposal for Sculpture Center Long Island City, NY

6/2009

The exterior courtyard of the Sculpture Center is a neon-green, gravel lawn. It forges a relationship between nature and an imitated version of nature. My proposal is to plant artificial puddles into the courtyards mock lawn.  Each puddle will contain a reflection of something that is not actually there. The synthetic materiality of the puddles will be emphasized by their ongoing presence and stillness. They will be cast into forms and positioned slightly below gravel level. The puddles will be irregular shapes and measure approximately 2 in diameter. They will be fabricated out of Crystal Clear 200 series casting urethane; Crystal Clear is hard, water-clear, and UV protected. The reflection images will be printed on large format translucent film, such as that used for window signage—they will be sealed inside the clear resin puddles.
